Platinum-selling Gospel duo Mary Mary made personal and industry history this week as their new self-titled CD debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Gospel and Contemporary Christian Music charts and at No. 8 on Billboard’s Top 200 best-selling album chart.
Released on July 19, “Mary Mary” has already achieved the highest chart position on the Top 200 in the group’s career. Their previous albums, 2000’s “Thankful” and 2002’s “Incredible”, peaked at No. 59 and No. 20, respectively.
With first week’s sales of 56,887, according to SoundScan (a 32 percent increase over their previous best week’s sales in 2002), Mary Mary becomes the best-selling Gospel debut of 2005. This honor was previously held by Donnie McClurkin for “Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs”.
Heaven, the first single from Mary Mary, continues to break chart records, most notably an unprecedented 9 week run as the No. 1 record on Billboard’s Gospel Radio chart, the first and only single to run 8 consecutive weeks or longer at No. 1. Heaven has also been a No. 1 R&R Gospel Radio Single for multiple weeks and has hit the No. 3 slot on the Billboard Bubbling Under – Hot R&B Singles chart.
Erica and Tina Campbell are Mary Mary, two real-life sisters who have brought revolutionary R&B, urban and hip-hop elements to the world of Christian music.
The duo’s new album, which features guest artist Kirk Franklin, was produced by Warryn Campbell. Campbell, Erica’s husband, produced their previous CDs as well. Their debut “Thankful”, which introduced the smash radio hit Shackles, was certified gold, then platinum by the RIAA. Their second project, “Incredible”, was certified gold by the RIAA.
Growing up in Inglewood, California, the sisters first sang publicly in their church choir and received their first break in 1998 with a song on the “Prince of Egypt” soundtrack.
Since their album debut in 2000, the duo has earned numerous Dove and Stellar Awards as well as a GRAMMY, a Soul Train Award and a Lady of Soul Award.
