Leaders, Students Unpack The Passion 07 Message Together

Publish Date: Jan 03, 2007

Day two of Passion 07 brought fervent requests from speakers during the gathering’s main sessions and afternoon Breakout Sessions. Acclaimed author/speaker Beth Moore spoke to the students in the morning General Session, followed by speaker/pastor Francis Chan in the General Session last evening.

In a compelling message on humility, Moore began, “This group is so important to me because of the huge things that happen in life from 18, 19 and 20 years old. I want 20,000 young people to be feverishly and ridiculously used by God. But that will not happen if pride gets in the way.”

Francis Chan came alongside the challenge of Moore in the evening session. “There is a concern. Do we really love God? I hear everyone singing loud but… It’s not about words. How much love are you in? You do crazy things when you’re in love. You’re happy to give anything. It doesn’t feel like service when you’re in love. Jesus is banging on that door saying, ‘Let me in. Let me in. I want this love relationship with you.’”

Describing the scene around God’s throne found in Revelation 4 and 5, Chan said, “If you look at that throne, see that relationship with Jesus, and you still have a lukewarm attitude, you don’t get it. I read it and I have to have that throne. I don’t care what it takes. When I understood that Jesus Christ rose from the grave… that meant I will too one day. I know that there is treasure and we will be worshiping Jesus forever.”

Passion Conferences founder/director Louie Giglio agreed at the session’s conclusion, “If what we’ve heard tonight is true, than what else are we going to do but say ‘No’ to the deception of world and say ‘Yes’ to the Jesus that is ours forever.”

Between morning and evening Main Sessions, students dispersed to venues and rooms in downtown Atlanta for Breakout Sessions. Led by renowned speakers, college leaders and artist-worshippers, students select one of over a dozen Breakout Sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons at the gathering.

In a Breakout Session held in the World Congress Center, David Crowder*Band entertained the connection between death, the soul and bluegrass music, entitled Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven But Nobody Wants to Die, based on the book by the same name, authored by band members David Crowder and Mike Hogan.

Through humorous and poignant anecdotes, and use of bluegrass musical interludes, frontman David Crowder recounted the story behind and the reason for the band’s recent inclusion of bluegrass to its music. “We found ourselves in the stream of bluegrass music [where] the ‘ever after’ makes a difference in the ‘here and now.’ We don’t believe that death is the ultimate calamity of this life here on earth, but that it’s swallowed up in victory. Jesus came and made things right, and something greater lies beyond.”

Passion 07 opened Monday at the Philips Arena and Georgia World Congress Center in downtown Atlanta with 23,000 in attendance and students representing 49 states, 33 countries and 1,165 campuses. Passion 07 is a four-day indoor gathering for college students and is being led by renowned speakers Louie Giglio, John Piper, Francis Chan and Beth Moore, among others, as well as artist-worshipers Chris Tomlin, David Crowder*Band, Charlie Hall, Matt Redman and more.
