GRITS And The Becoming Featured On HearItFirst.ca

Publish Date: Sep 26, 2008

This week’s premieres feature return of some grammatical lyricists and the debut from a band described as “Swedish-dark-pop meets My Chemical Romance and AFI”.

Reiterate, GRITS eighth full-length album, marks the beginning of this new era for the best-selling crew. Not only is the tandem made up of Teron “Bonafide” Carter and Stacy “Coffee” Jones still actively recording; but after more than a decade with boutique independent label Gotee Records, the emcees are stepping out and launching Revolution Art, an indie label of their own that, they hope, will make more than just hits.

With faith, art and people as their pillars, GRITS set out to record Reiterate, the boldest representation of their craft to date. The title may lead some to believe that these street poets are repeating themselves – rehashing ideas that have been done before. But not so fast. “What we’re reiterating is almost like, instead of going back and trying to re-lay a foundation, we’re continuing on what we’ve already laid about 10 years ago,” Bonafide says. “We want to go into the music thinking that. If you don’t, you’re going to miss it. You might mess up.”

As the first single, “Remind Me Of You” attests, Reiterate takes every preconception you might have about GRITS and turns it on its head. The song is an audacious primer for the rest of the album, as the frenetic, buzzed-out track incorporates backbeats and synth elements reminiscent of the glory days of the 80s. It’s a celebration of sound, juxtaposed by a sombre lyric. “Subjectively, it’s a very heavy song, but the way it’s presented, people will connect with it.

Guest appearances on the project include tobyMac, Mac Powell of Third Day, Dan Haseltine of Jars Of Clay, Martha Munizzi, Brit Nicole, Pigeon John and others.

With sharp infectious hooks most bands would kill for, The Becoming comes out with a debut that showcases creativity and ability most bands will never achieve.

In the vein of Swedish-dark-pop meets My Chemical Romance and AFI, Volume 1 is an album packed with anthems of love, loss, redemption, and hope. The amount of blood, sweat and tears shed over each song can be felt from the opening lines to the closing verses of the album. Bridging the gaps between Rock, Pop, Emo, and Metal this is a record for the masses that are tired of the cookie-cutter Rock and Pop, who are ready for something new.

Volume 1 will be specially priced at $12.99. Both titles will be arriving at your local Canadian Christian retailer on September 30th.
