Great God Who Saves
Psalm 27: 13, 14

“I would have despaired unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the Lord.”

I am writing this devotional seated in a sparcely populated terminal of the Lambert St. Louis International Airport, waiting for a flight back to Atlanta. As I sit here, it’s hard not to recall being in this same place almost two years ago, after only hours earlier hearing over the phone line the dreaded words from my husband: brain tumor. Much like today, people from all different walks of life were stuck waiting in this terminal, all eager to get home for one reason or another. None, I thought, could be as anxious as I.

Reflecting on that day and these two years that have gone by, I am reminded of this psalm to which I have clung. Now, when I use the word “clung”, I mean it in a very literal sense. That day, I read these words from the pages of my Bible and then clutched the pleather-bound copy to my chest, praying that God would really give me the faith to believe it.

This verse has been the source of much strength these past two years. It has also been the story of who I am. “I would have despaired.” This is not to say that I have never had moments of desperation; but greater than my feelings of despair were God’s promises of goodness. And greater than my grieving has been His plan of redemption… His fierce commitment to me and to making all things work together for good.

He calls us each to patience…. to wait on Him. I am still learning what this looks like; but, strangely, I do find my heart taking courage in this command. So, I continue to wait, yet again, in this airport, remembering that such is life.

Father, help me not to consider my days merely an endless game of waiting. Rather, grant me a heightened sensitivity to Your gentle presence, reminding me that You are always there and always good.
