Indescribable
Psalm 8

“O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory
above the heavens.

From the lips of children and infants
you have ordained praise
because of your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.

When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
the son of man that you care for him?

You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.

You made him ruler over the works of your hands;
you put everything under his feet:
all flocks and herds,
and the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air,
and the fish of the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.

O LORD, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

Is God big or small? Yes, this is a trick question, but one well worth considering. He created the heavens and all the expanse of space with the breath of his word; yet He stoops to count the hairs on my head. He is high and exalted, as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, yet condescended to be born as a baby, laid in an animal’s feeding trough. He is everywhere and there is nowhere I can flee from His presence; yet He is here sitting right beside me.

Our God is both magnificently massive and yet infinitesimally intimate. He is the Lord of Hosts who has created each star in each solar system in each galaxy; yet He is so personal that He takes the time to bless each one of them with a name. And as He supernaturally sees the inside of every person’s heart, even the hidden things that we admit to no one, rather than withholding His love from us, He loves us enough to make a way for forgiveness. Even the God-inspired words of the psalmist fall short of capturing His greatness… how could I even begin to. He is truly indescribable.

God, give me eyes to see You as You are. May your greatness and majesty always humble me to my knees; and there I will find you, ready to meet with me.
