A legend in the Southern Gospel community, George Younce passed away early this morning after a lengthy battle with health problems. George was born in Patterson, North Carolina in 1930 and has left an indelible mark on Southern Gospel music. Joining his first quartet at the age of 16, George was a part of several other groups before joining the Cathedral Quartet in 1964. George also released several solos projects in his latter years as well as being a part of the Old Friends Quartet along with Ernie Haase, Wesley Pritchard and the late Jake Hess.
In addition to countless appearances on stage and tv with the Cathedral Quartet, George was a regular performer on the Gaither Homecoming tours and videos. His list of distinctions include induction into both the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame, 14 Singing News Fan Awards as favorite bass, Gospel Music’s Living Legend Award, a Dove Award, and multiple Grammy nominations.
His energy, humour, positive attitude and, of course, his smooth bass vocals made him one of Southern Gospel’s most-loved performers.
Mike Moran from Canadian Southern Gospel group The Torchmen told YMZ, “Over the years you get to meet very few people who are ‘Special’. George Younce was a special person. Put aside the musical talent and the professional skills and you’ve still found an individual with a caring heart, a love for people and most importantly – love for his Lord. The Torchmen have known George for more than 30 years and he has always been encouraging and supportive. I am sure going to miss ‘having a hug’ laid on me.”
