The members of Generation Unleashed recount how they came to write the songs for their debut album.
ALWAYS
Songwriter: Jeremy Scott
We were rehearsing for our youth conference and writing songs, but weren’t getting anywhere. We were frustrated because we had a couple songs we were working on, but couldn’t seem to finish them. So I jumped on electric guitar and started making up this little riff. We then, as a band, played through the idea a couple times and in about 20 minutes the lyrics just came to me. That song literally came out of a frustrating time in practice that showed me sometimes when you’re trying hard to follow God and do what He’s called you to do, you just need to stop for a moment and remember that He’s in control – He’s the source of every song. That’s the message behind the song and that’s what the chorus points to – looking to God and realizing our constant need for him.
HE LIVES
Songwriter: Jeremy Scott
This song started as two separate songs. The theme that kept coming to me in writing was HE LIVES. The melody came to me for the chorus, but I had no idea what to do for the verse. I kept thinking about letting people know Jesus is alive. I had started writing another song that had the same idea, but during one practice, we just decided to merge the two songs together.
SAVED MY SOUL
Songwriter: Jeremy Scott
This verse and chorus came out of my personal time with God during my morning devotions. It’s about Christ dying on the cross and the whole salvation message. I was just singing through this song in my devotions. It excited me! The bridge then came out of that excitement of knowing salvation through Christ.
THROUGH CHRIST
Songwriter: Donna Lasit
I wrote this song during a stretching season for me. The verse, “I can do all things through Christ,” kept going through my mind. I sat down at the piano and starting singing the scripture from Philippians. Out of that came a chorus and then later on the same day, the verses came to me. I started singing about how I was going to live in reflection to that verse and I was going to trust God’s word and live by it
SONG IN MY HEART
Songwriter: Matt Bushard
I was driving in my car, praying on my way to work. The melody for the verse came into my head. The whole first verse flowed out on that way to work. I then took and worked on it for a month or so at home. I changed the chorus a couple times until I found something that was worshipful, congregational and flowed with the theme of the song.
KING OF ALL
Songwriter: Isaac Tarter
“King of All” was written out of a place of simply wanting to give God glory. I wanted to write something that God could use and that He could be lifted up by.
SHOUT IT OUT
Songwriter: Jeremy Scott
I had the idea “Shout, Shout, Shout it out” going through my head for a while. I wanted to write a song that was bold – in your face and holding nothing back. Just like the song says, “The world needs to know.” I focused on the thought of not being ashamed, but living for now and telling the world. It’s about being the light and reaching as many people as we can now.
BE LIFTED HIGH
Songwriter: Jordan Filip
Both verses came out of my personal worship time on my guitar in my room. The chorus and bridge came to me during rehearsals. I wanted to write a song that was upbeat and had a refreshing feel to it.
I WORSHIP YOU
Songwriter: Esther Filip
This song came out of a personal prayer time at the piano. I was reading through Psalm 139 about my purpose and defining purpose. I was praying and coming back to a place of knowing that God knows me. He’s planned all my steps and all my days.
SHINE
Songwriter: Jeremy Scott
This song has the most meaning and history behind it for me. A bunch of stuff was happening in my life and in my family, and the song came from that time. I wrote it right before my mom died of cancer. I came to a point where I realized that nothing really matters besides spreading the gospel. Our pastor had been preaching a message called “Shine” and that thought stuck with me throughout that season.
ALL THAT I NEED
Songwriter: Isaac Tarter
I was at home playing the piano when the chorus came to me. I wrote the verse from the perspective of someone who was broken or needed God’s presence. I hope its a song someone in that place could sing which would point to the true source of healing.
CARRIED ME
Songwriter: Donna Lasit
I had been praying one morning and saw the different seasons that I experienced with the Lord.
I LOVE YOU LORD
Songwriter: Laurie Klein (As told by Donna Lasit)
During one of my devotions, I was singing “Carried Me.” As I was singing, the song “I Love You Lord” came to me. I had played this song in my devotions for years. I brought the idea of singing them together to a practice and Jeremy immediately caught on to it. We played the chord progression and began worshipping, and this new version of the song came out of that free time of worship.
