When Seventh Day Slumber titled their latest effort Rescatame, it was more than an eye-catching phrase or compelling means to listen. Instead it was birthed from the severe struggles and setbacks faced within the group and the desire to be reborn through Christ’s cleansing blood. Sure, there have been plenty of emotional testimonies tossed around within the confines of Christian music over the years, but rarely has there been one so enthralling and encouraging as these guys, particularly that of front man and founder Joseph Rojas, once known to have a $400 a day cocaine habit.
“The easiest way to summarize it is to say I felt so empty inside that I just wanted to die,” the singer says with a sombre demeanour. “My father left when I was three, by twelve I thought of ending my life by pulling the trigger and I was using drugs by the time I turned fourteen. I was getting into trouble with the law, became a convicted felon and then my addiction spiralled out of control, turning into me spending more money on drugs than I was making selling them.”
After years of reckless living, continued run ins with the legal system, dozens of failed rehab attempts and absolute hopelessness, Rojas hit rock bottom with an overdose, during which paramedics rushed to save his life. Though there had never been any formal spirituality in the angst filled teen’s life, there was something about seeing the ambulance’s lights flash brightly before his weary eyes that finally clicked after so much endless searching.
“I was laying there realizing I was about to die and knew I needed to do something,” he recalls. “In every rehab centre I went to, there was always this mentioning of reaching to a higher power. For some reason that night, I reached out to God and asked him to save me from the situation.”
Getting that extra chance at life following the episode confirmed to Rojas that he was indeed being looked after, and despite having no earthly dad, realized his Heavenly Father was there as a means of deliverance. Granted the road to recovery didn’t happen overnight, but after being released from the hospital, the one time addict found himself free and wanting to dedicate his life to the Lord.
“I’m not gonna lie and say it changed over night, but it started to get less and less and so did other bad habits like swearing and smoking,” he confides. “Once I got my act together, I went to Bible College at Christ for the Nations in Dallas and that’s where God started laying song-writing on my heart. I had messed around with guitar before, but that’s when I really decided to take it seriously and offer something back to God.”
Displaying such vulnerability in the lyrics and possessing a bone crunching rock sound to reach a hurting audience translated to an incredible connection with listeners and eventually lead to the incredibly successful U.S. efforts Picking Up the Pieces, Once Upon A Shattered Life, and Finally Awake. These projects have yielded six top ten R&R Christian Rock hits (“My Struggle”, “Candy”, “I Know”, “Shattered Life”, “Innocence”, “Spiraling”) the first four of which went to number one, along with a BMI Award for “Most Played Music at Christian Rock Radio” and a Dove Award nomination. In the R&R Christian CHR world, the band has also had incredible success with ”Caroline” (Top 5), “Oceans From The Rain” (Top 5), and “Missing Pages” (Top 5). But more than just basking in the glow of those achievements, Rojas, bassist Joshua Schwartz, guitarist Jeremy Holderfield and drummer Ray Fryoux sought to strip back the barriers between the crowd and stage to relate on a spiritually intimate level.
“It’s always been our goal as a band to really relate to fans and I think we’re able to do that so well because we’ve been exactly where they are before,” he contends. “There is so much hurting, so much pain that we see when we look out and a lot of times living a Christian life can get sugar coated from the stage. That’s just the opposite for us since we’ll be the first to share how we’ve messed up and asked people to pray for us as we’re all still far from flawless.”
In terms of both lifting up the Lord and reaching out to others, Rescatame is stocked solid with ten gripping tracks. Issues relating to Rojas’ recovery are plentiful, as are references to being born again (brought first hand by Fryoux) a look at divorce and rebellion (contributed by Holderfield) and a commitment to sexual purity (conveyed by Schwartz). Such scenarios are steeped in reality, but also intertwined with a tangible hopefulness that promises peace when truly surrendering over a life of sin.
“The fact of the matter is there are kids we talk to every day that want to end their lives, just like I did at one point, because their struggle is so great,” Rojas relays. “We’re trying to point them toward the truth and we’re not afraid to lay ourselves on the line in these songs in order to do that.”
The band teamed up with producer Alex Allen to bring Rescatame to fruition. Allen is one of the most well renowned Latin Christian Music producers in Latin America, who has been producing, recording and mixing albums since the late 80’s. From his studio in Nashville, THE BOX, he has worked with some of the most popular and influential artists in the industry and has been nominated multiple times for the Latin Grammys®, Dove Awards and ARPA Awards. Additionally, the record received co-production and translation assistance from the late and deeply missed Soraya.
Those exposed souls can be found first hand throughout the album in captivating alternative rock romps, akin to the likes of mainstream giants 3 Doors Down, Staind and Nickelback. Take for instance the redemptive qualities of the barreling “Brand New Man”, and the need to commit our life to the Lord’s will in the scorching “Break Me”. There’s also the melodic nature of the Prodigal Son themed “Shattered Life”, the gentle introspection about self-esteem on “Caroline” and the clear message to those battling harmful addictions in “Missing Pages”.
“I think our lyrics are really God breathed on this record and we’ve already gotten so many emails about a song changing someone’s life,” Rojas summarizes. “Basically, we want people to understand that we’re not rock stars or anyone that’s better than they are. We’re just a bunch of guys who are still leaning on God’s grace and we can attest to His incredible power in forgiveness. He doesn’t sit up in heaven wanting you to be afraid because you’re not holy enough to come to Him. We want this record to be a testimony that God wants everyone to let Him in and to pray that whatever’s messing you up gets turned around. I can promise from personal experience that’s exactly what He’ll do!”

Cuando Seven Day Slumber tituló su último disco Rescátame, fue mucho más que solo una palabra que suena bien o una forma de llamar la atención. Por el contrario, nació de enormes dificultades y contratiempos enfrentados dentro del grupo y del deseo de nacer de nuevo por la sangre limpiadora de Cristo. Claro, han habido muchos fuertes testimonios esparcidos por los confines de la música cristiana al pasar de los años, pero raramente ha habido uno tan fascinante e inspirador como el de estos jóvenes, particularmente el del líder y fundador de la banda, Joseph Rojas, el cual llegó a tener una adicción de cocaína que le costaba alrededor de $400 dólares al día.
“La forma más sencilla de explicarlo es el de decir que me sentía tan vacío por dentro que me quería morir,” comenta el cantante. “Mi padre se fue cuando yo tenía tres años; a los doce años pensé en suicidarme usando una pistola y ya usaba drogas a la edad de catorce años. Me empecé a meter en problemas con la ley, estuve en la cárcel y poco después mi adicción se salió fuera de control, gastaba más dinero en comprar drogas de lo que ganaba vendiéndolas”.
Después de años de vivir imprudentemente, de continuos problemas con la ley, docenas de fracasos en centros de rehabilitación y sin una gota de esperanza, Rojas tocó fondo con una sobredosis en la cual los paramédicos se apresuraron a salvarle la vida. Aunque nunca realmente había habido ningún tipo de formación espiritual en la vida de este trastornado joven, al ver las resplandecientes luces de la ambulancia y enfrentarse con su realidad, hubo algo que hizo clic en él después de una larga búsqueda.
“Acostado ahí, dándome cuenta que estaba a punto de morir supe que tenía que hacer algo”, recuerda él. “En todas las clínicas de rehabilitación que acudí, siempre comentaban al respecto de buscar un poder más alto. Por alguna razón en esa noche, clamé a Dios y le pedí que me salvara de mi situación”.
El recibir una nueva oportunidad para vivir después de tan difícil incidente, le confirmó a Rojas que en verdad había alguien cuidándolo en todo momento y que a pesar de no tener un padre carnal, se dio cuenta que su Padre Celestial estaba ahí para rescatarlo. Por supuesto, el camino de recuperación no fue de la noche a la mañana, pero después de salir del hospital, este muchacho una vez adicto a las drogas se sintió libre y queriendo dedicar su vida a Dios.
“No voy a mentir y decir que todo cambió en un instante, pero fue poco a poco que fui quitándome los malos hábitos incluyendo el decir groserías y dejar el cigarro,” Rojas comenta. “Una vez que logré ordenar mi vida acudí a la Universidad Bíblica de Cristo Para las Naciones (Bible College at Christ for the Nations) en Dallas y fue ahí donde Dios comenzó a sembrar la composición de canciones en mi corazón. En el pasado había tocado algo de guitarra pero fue entonces que decidí tomarlo más en serio y ofrecerle algo más a Dios.”
Mostrando tanta vulnerabilidad en sus letras y poseyendo un sonido rockero para alcanzar una audiencia llena de dolor, se convirtió en un increíble punto de conección con su público que por consecuencia los llevó a tener exitosos discos en Estados Unidos como Picking Up the Pieces (Levantando las piezas), Once Upon A Shattered Life (Erase una vez una vida rota), y Finally Awake (Finalmente despierto). Estos proyectos le han otorgado seis lugares en los “Top Ten” de las listas de popularidad en el rock cristiano americano ("My Struggle”, “Candy”, “I Know”, “Shattered Life”, “Innocence”, “Spiraling"). La primera gira de la banda quedó en número uno, recibieron el Premio de BMI por “La música cristiana más escuchada en la radio cristiana” y una nominación a los Premios Dove. Pero más que solo en deleitarse en el orgullo de sus logros, Rojas, el bajista Joshua Schwartz, el guitarrista Jeremy Holderfield y el baterista Ray Fryoux, han buscado derrumbar las barreras entre el público y el escenario para poder relacionarse a un nivel íntimamente espiritual.
“Nuestra meta siempre ha sido que la gente pueda identificarse con nosotros y creo que lo hemos logrado porque nosotros hemos estado antes exactamente donde ellos se encuentran,” explica Rojas. “Hay tantas heridas, tanto dolor el cual vemos cuando miramos al público y muchas veces el andar de la vida cristiana se pinta color rosa en el escenario. Esto es completamente opuesto a nosotros ya que somos los primeros en compartir cómo nos hemos equivocado e incluso le hemos pedido a la gente que ore por nosotros, ya que seguimos estando lejos de ser perfectos.”
“Rescátame” no solo ensalza a Dios y alcanza al que escucha el mensaje, también provee de diez sólidas y apasionantes canciones. Temas relacionados con la recuperación de Rojas son abundantes, como también lo son el nacer de nuevo (contribuido directamente por Fryoux), un vistazo al divorcio y a la rebelión (contribuido por Holderfield) y la promesa de la pureza sexual (comunicado por Schwartz). Tales temas son claramente expuestos, pero también entrelazados con una esperanza tangible que promete paz cuando verdaderamente entregas una vida que ha estado llena de pecado.
“La realidad es que diariamente hablamos con jóvenes que quieren acabar con sus vidas como yo quise hacerlo en un momento de mi vida ya que su lucha es demasiado pesada,” comenta Rojas. “Estamos tratando de orientarlos hacia la verdad y no tenemos miedo de dar nuestras vidas en estas canciones para lograr nuestro objetivo.”
La banda unió esfuerzos con Alejandro Allen para la realización del disco “Rescátame”. Con más de 18 años de experiencia y graduado en Full Sail en Orlando, Florida, Alejandro es uno de los productores más reconocidos en la industria de la música cristiana latina. Realizando docenas de discos desde su estudio “THE BOX”, Alejandro ha producido y colaborado con algunos de los artistas y músicos más reconocidos en la industria de la música cristiana latina y norteamericana. También, ha sido nominado múltiples veces al Grammy® Latino, a los Dove Awards y a los Premios ARPA.
Por otra parte “Rescátame” recibió la colaboración de la reconocida cantante Soraya en la co-producción y asistencia de traducciones en algunas canciones del disco, desgraciadamente ella falleció de cancer en Mayo del 2006 antes de que el disco estuviera terminado.
Dejando el corazón y el alma durante todo el álbum en cautivadoras canciones de rock alternativo, semejantes a los conocidos grupos seculares como 3 Doors Down, Staind y Nickelback. Tomando las fuertes cualidades redentoras de la canción “Hombre nuevo”, la necesidad de someter nuestra vida a la voluntad de Dios en el tema “Quisieron quebrarme” y la melodiosa naturaleza del hijo pródigo titulada “Rescátame”. La suave introspección acerca de la autoestima en “Carolina” y el mensaje claro para aquellos combatiendo fuertes adicciones en “Nadie te conoce ya”.
“Creo que las letras de este disco han sido inspiradas por Dios, hemos recibido tantos correos electrónicos de cómo alguna de nuestras canciones cambiaron la vida de esa persona” dice Rojas. “Básicamente, queremos transmitirle a la gente que entendemos que no somos estrellas de rock o mejores que ellos. Solamente somos un grupo de muchachos que siguen apoyándose en la gracia de Dios y que hemos sido testigos del increíble poder de Su perdón. Él no se sienta arriba en el cielo queriendo que uno le tenga miedo porque uno no es suficientemente santo para llegar a Él. Queremos que este disco hable acerca de cómo Dios quiere que le dejemos entrar, y para que oremos sabiendo que cualquier cosa que nos está estorbando cambiará para bien. ¡Puedo prometer por experiencia propia que eso es exactamente lo que Dios hará!
