Music is a powerful tool that reaches into the very soul of man. When music is added with the Gospel of Christ lives are changed. The Down East Boys are true examples of life-changing music. Almost twenty years ago a vision was turned into a reality and a group of men began singing on the coastal regions of North Carolina. As the music began to change lives the ministry began to expand. In 1989, The Down East Boys were blessed to have a single entitled “Beautiful Valley”, which helped lead the group from part time status to full time.
The past decade and a half has brought much success to this talented quartet. Numerous popular radio releases and award nominations are tangible accolades they have enjoyed. In 1991, the group was voted recipients of the Horizon Group of the Year Award by the subscribers of The Singing News Magazine, Southern Gospel Music’s leading fan and trade publication. With ministry being their top priority The Down East Boys have been honored to conduct a number of crusades throughout the nation with Dr. Jim Wilson, Dr. Ralph Bell and Franklin Graham, affiliates of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. They have also worked with other evangelists including Kelly Green, Rick Stanley and Jay Strack. The Down East Boys have been given the opportunity to lead musical worship in several State Evangelism Conferences as well as the Chapel Service sponsored by Motor Racing Outreach at the 1994 Atlanta 500 NASCAR Race.
Beyond the many honours The Down East Boys have achieved, lies a group with desires and goals to spread God’s message of life everlasting. The desire is the premise on which their ministry was founded over twenty years ago.
The Down East Boys are very serious about the music they sing. “We feel we have a calling to share the message of hope with a world that seems to have no hope”, says Ricky Carden. Each individual shares a common goal to be the best they can possibly be to glorify and honour the Lord, presenting the Gospel in song with quality and excellence. They strive to present a program that will be pleasing to everyone and truly uplifts the Kingdom of God.
An energetic display of quality Gospel Music is an appropriate description of the musical ministry offered to audiences across the country. “We feel a deep responsibility of the people who are a part of the concerts and services where we perform”, Carden relates. “If we do not convey the eternal message of salvation, we have failed in our responsibility as music ministers, but more importantly, we have failed in our responsibility as Christians.”
