Millions of people know the stories of A.A. Milne but few people are aware that they were inspired by a real bear. Milne and his son Christopher met the real Winnie at the London Zoo in 1926. A Bear Named Winnie is based on the story of that amazing bear.

It is August 1914 and World War I has just begun. Lt. Harry Colebourn of Winnipeg (Michael Fassbender; Band of Brothers), is assigned to the Canadian Army Veterinary Corps. He and his detachment are travelling across Canada by train on their way to England. During a brief stop-over in White River, Ontario, Lt. Colebourn purchases a young female bear cub from a hunter. He names her Winnie, after his home town and, in spite of warnings from his fellow soldiers and the direct orders of his commanding officer (Gil Bellows; Ally McBeal), takes her with him to the camp where the Canadian Expeditionary Force is gathering before shipping out to England. Winnie is a breath of fresh air for the young soldiers faced with the prospect of war, and she travels with them all the way to Salisbury Plain in England. When Harry’s regiment is sent to fight in France, the young vet knows Winnie can not go. He finds a home for her with Protheroe the Zookeeper (Stephen Fry; Harry Potter, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), at the London Zoo, promising to return as soon as the war is over and take her back to Canada. Winnie becomes the star attraction at the Zoo. For the children of London, living in the shadow of a frightening war, Winnie becomes a symbol of friendship and hope.
