Listen to these four EPs and you’ll find yourself taking the first steps of Delirious? From the likes of Thank You For Saving Me and Lord You Have My Heart to Obsession and I’m Not Ashamed, these first recordings capture the essence of what it meant to be a Christian in the UK in the early 1990s.

With worship on the verge of an explosion and a new generation taking the reins, the sense of optimism and devotion was all over the place. It’s no surprise that some of the band’s best loved songs come from these first releases: Did You Feel The Mountains Tremble still rumbles today while I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever has proved that the title choice was spot on.

There’s a line on the original packaging of Live & In The Can about the people who came to the gigs: if you were there, it says, then you’re probably live and in the can. The band’s first ever live album really was a family affair, with tracks recorded at a whole bunch of low-key early gigs up and down the the UK. But more than a scrapbook, the album captures something of the energy and expectation that was firing up the country back in 1996. Life doesn’t get much rawer.

And then comes King Of Fools. Spewing the top twenty hit Deeper yet bearing their soul to a watching world, the album fast-tracked the band into the mainstream music world. Reaching number 13 in the UK album chart, King Of Fools set the course for the future by exploding the limitations that previously held ‘Christian’ music back.

It was 1999. We were thinking about the millennium bug and The Matrix and getting concerned. Then along comes Mezzamorphis: perhaps the most adventurous, self-assured album ever released by Delirious? With the bluster of Bliss, the force of Gravity and Heaven and the guts of It’s OK, the album scored some pretty decent mainstream reviews.

Then a year later, and it was time for a change. Glo showed that the band played with just as much passion in church as they did in the club. As far as Delirious? albums go it’s a real treat. With the band returning to their church-first roots they churned out a whole bunch of in-your-face anthems and on-your-knees classics. From My Glorious to Investigate, the album turns up the heat.
