Johnny Cash had Gospel on his mind in 1954 when he came to Sun Records in Memphis. He and his buddies Marshall rant and Luther Perkins jammed on gospel tunes to unwind from their day jobs. It wasn't until joining up with Columbia Records in 1958 that he was able to fulfill his longstanding dream of recording a gospel album. A lifelong Bible scholar and friend to various religious luminaries, the sacred vein remained in his repertoire up through that final recordings he made before he died in 2003.
