Anticipation
From singing in the Detroit City elementary school choir to forming the 80 voice High School Gospel Choir Voices of Victory, it goes without question that Damita Haddon was in musical training at a young age. During these early years, Damita also enjoyed sharing the music platform with her twin sister, Marguerita. The sisters were surrounded by music and they were influenced by countless family members, "Both sides of my family are musically inclined. Everyone is a singer, musician or a preacher". In their household, their mother would continuously play various genres of music including, gospel and classical music for them to sing along with.
Wherever they went as a family, you would hear music from any of the great gospel choirs or artists being played in the car or throughout the house. Music was definitely a staple in Damita's family life. "We were a musical family, Damita said. "Really it was just church and music but I remember running around the house with my twin sister, picking up brushes & combs singing into them when my mom would play a record."
When Damita wasn't studying in school or playing with her sister, she would be found listening to such artists as Tramaine Hawkins, The Clark Sisters, Commissioned, Witness, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, DeBarge, Phil Collins, André Crouch, Celine Dion, The Winans and Darryl Hall & Oates. Whether she listened to a family member or her favourite artist, it was evident that music would forever run through her veins
Damita's early memories of singing with combs and brushes fuelled her desire to later form the all female a cappella group, Adoration-N-Prayze along with her twin sister Marguerita. The group's fresh and anointed sound caught the attention of many throughout Detroit and the Midwest.
Adoration-N-Prayze went from rehearsing and performing to one day singing at the birthday party of a Record Company Executive. "We were invited to sing at the President of TM Records' birthday party not knowing this guy had a record label," recalled Damita. "Our first and only release was Time Is Running Out. We were nominated for a Stellar Award for that project."
Damita's career expanded and positioned her for more opportunities including, singing background for the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. This was just one of many platforms that helped to launch her career as a solo artist. "I never knew, nor would have thought in a million years I would be a solo artist."
As a solo artist, the inevitable transpired when Ms. Damita pulled from all her past experiences for her second solo album, No Looking Back. With vocals and production to rival anything on mainstream radio today coupled with foundational Gospel messages, Damita stepped right into the role of a young Gospel star. From its Urban Inspirational, Urban Contemporary, Praise and Worship and Rock sounds, to its Caribbean beats, No Looking Back was decidedly youth inspired. Damita explained, "I went a little more youthful on this release because I think that our young people really need this right now. We really need to get their attention. They are faced with so much temptation and if we don't do something that makes them feel special, that moves and motivates them, somebody else will."
No Looking Back set the stage for Damita's career and her bold declaration opened the door to new possibilities, a fresh anointing, new sound, and further into her destiny.
So much more was revealed in 2012 when Damita began working on her new project Anticipation on Tyscot Music & Entertainment. Anticipation is just one of many endeavours Damita has embarked on, since her last CD project.
Anticipation is a true gem and features many songs written by Damita including "Won't Turn Back", "Praise You Now", "Be Revealed", "You're Amazing God", "Super She'RO" and the title cut "Anticipation (Waitin 4 u)".
When asked how Anticipation differs from previous projects she stated, "It is different in perspective to the position I was in naturally, mentally and spiritually. When recording No Looking Back I was making a definitive decision to move forward with my music and accepting the path God was leading me on. This Anticipation project was a build up of a long waited follow up or sequel to what we started on NLB (no looking back)".
Damita's new position was prompted by one major life changing experience, the loss of her mother Ruby Bass. She received the heartbreaking news during the early production phase of Anticipation. For most artists, creating an album is a joyous time, but it was very trying for Damita. "It was enough to take me out because it was unexpected...," Damita explains, "She was my anchor, my supporter, my prayer warrior who prayed everything through for me."
Yes, Damita suffered a loss, but she gained strength from God and was inspired to pen more songs and complete Anticipation. All of the songs were birthed from a sincere place in her heart, especially the track "Super She'Ro" because it was inspired by her mother. "Super She'Ro was inspired by my mother who recently passed. The day before she died she told me she always believed in me and that she completely supports me in whatever it is I decided to do with my life.
Damita also hopes the liberating song will encourage women to press through any adversity in life. "So 'Super She'Ro' is an anthem for every female who has ever felt defeated or lacked confidence in themselves to motivate them to celebrate the inner strength that God has given each of us to become the absolute best we can be with gifts that He has given us."
Anticipation is great mixture of relevant and transparent material reaching listeners where they are and encouraging them to press forward into destiny. The entire project was definitely birthed straight from Damita's heart.
From her early years of singing with her twin sister to a phenomenal solo career, Damita continues to be a mouthpiece for God. When asked, where she sees herself in the future, she says, "I see my music career and ministry expanding and evolving."
Damita is forever evolving in so many areas of her life and it is evident, as a singer, songwriter, minister and woman of destiny, God is truly doing a new thing in her life.
